Russian Drama Theatre of Estonia was established in December 1948. It resides in a magnificent building in the very center of Tallinn, next to the Old Town. The house of the theatre is famous for its splendid and unique interiors. It was built in 1926 and originally was intended for the luxury cinema. Today it's considered to be the most beautiful theatre building in Scandinavia.

During the season of 2004/2006, the Russian Theater had undergone a general reconstruction, resulting in restoration of the historical image of the building's interiors. At the same time, the theatre was turned into one of the most technically perfect theater venues. There are

The company has been rewarded for its mastery of performing and originality of staging: the theatre is honoured with prize of the international festival "Meetings in Russia" (St. Petersburg), with the prize of festival "Belaya Vezha" (Republic of Belarus) etc.

Premieres of practically all plays of the Russian drama classics took place at the Russian Theater: from the "Woes of Wits" by A. Griboyedov to the plays by A. Chekhov and novels by F. Dostoyevsky. A number of greatest Russian actors performed on the stage of the theatre: O. Strizhenov, A. Solonitsyn, A. Rogovtseva etc. The outstanding theater directors, such as A. Tarkovsky, R. Viktjuk, J. Yeremin worked at the theater.

The Russian theatre has very vast repertoire. Sparkling with brilliant humour comedies, breathtaking dramas, plays for children are hugely popular with local theatre-goers. Among the best performances: Dancing at Lughnasa by B. Friel, The Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson, Cipollino by G. Rodari, Funny Money by R. Cooney, Leading Ladies by Ken Ludwig, The Woe from wit by A.S.Griboyedov, Silver age (play about the famous Russian poets), Don Juan by J.-B. Molier, concert „Our favorite movie songs" etc.
