SHOWING THE PERFORMANCE IN TALLINN WITH SUPPORT

Directed by Rimas Tuminas, Maria Peters

Co-producer of the production: Les Gemeaux, Sceaux, France.

The play is in Hebrew. In Tallinn, performances are translated into Estonian, Russian and English language.

The present time offers amazing, previously unthinkable combinations, and so the Estonian audience will have the opportunity for the first time to see a Russian classic performed by the Israeli theatre, brought to the stage by a famous Lithuanian director. Rimas Tuminas is well known to Estonian theatre audience. Several high-level productions of the Vakhtangov Theatre have been performed at the Golden Mask festival. Let us only recall productions such as "Uncle Vanya" (2010), Eugene Onegin" (2014) and "Oedipus the King" (2018).

"Anna Karenina" of the Gesher Theatre is a continuation of the direction of Russian classics in Tuminas' work. He was invited to work in a theatre in Tel Aviv in 2022. The name of the theatre means bridge and it was founded in 1991 by Yevgeny Arye, an innovative director who settled in Israel, together with his students. To date, the Gesher Theatre has become a prominent phenomenon on the Israeli theatre scene. The theatre makes an important contribution to the language thread by playing in Hebrew with Russian subtitles.

Tuminas has said about the heroine of his new production: "I see her not as one-dimensional, but as a collection of all possible women - she is a gentle mother, a quarrelsome wife, extremely jealous, generous and benevolent, greedy and envious - in her, darkness and light coexist inextricably, pleasure and pain." In the vision of the masterful director, "Anna Karenina" is light, without excessive words (there are no life-sized locomotives either!) - the story of a person who is looking for a universal truth that would bring peace, reconciliation, goodness and happiness.

Rimas Tuminas: "The viewer is ready to listen to words that change his consciousness. We need to sift through the verbal ore to the most precious love, kindness and divine predestination, to what is important to everyone and always.”
